New report: Maryland lagged behind nation in getting nursing home COVID-19 cases down after mass vaccinations

BALTIMORE -- Despite a sharp national drop in coronavirus infections in nursing homes in December, Maryland did not see such a decline until January. As mass vaccinations rolled out across the state and country, new cases dropped between Dec. 20 and Feb. 7 by 53 percent in Maryland, below the national average of 83 percent and one of the worst performances in the nation.

NURSING HOMES STILL DON’T HAVE ENOUGH MASKS, GOWNS, OTHER PPE

A new analysis by the U.S. PIRG Education Fund and Frontier Group found that 8 percent of nursing homes nationwide as of Dec. 27 had a critical shortage of surgical-grade N95 masks, which are the best protection against spreading the virus. Additionally, 4 to 6 percent of nursing homes reported shortages in at least one other category of personal protective equipment.
